There are two ways in which food waste can be reduced and recycled and that is anaerobic digestion and in-vessel composting. Let’s talk about anaerobic digestion first.  We will collect the food waste to recycling plants where it is turned into an energy source or fuel using anaerobic digestion. The food waste is burnt at high temperatures in an enclosed space to control the release of harmful gasses to the atmosphere.

In-vessel composting is the mixing of food waste with garden waste which is then shredded and then composed in an enclosed system for  up to 4 weeks at temperatures of up to 70°C speed up the process and ensure any harmful  microbes are killed off. The material is then left outside to mature for a further 1-3 months with regular turning and checks to ensure quality before going on to be used as soil conditioner.

Most people just dump their food in landfills because it is biodegradable. However, there are dangers associated with this such as the release of methane into the atmosphere. Methane gas is way more dangerous than carbon dioxide and when food is composting, it releases a lot of it.
